How do I get to Casa Cabo Pulmo?

Flights:
Take a flight to Los Cabos International Airport SJD (serves Cabo San Lucas and San Jose). You can also fly into La Paz but it is about 3 hours away (driving) from Cabo Pulmo.

Rental Cars:
Cars are easily available at Los Cabos airport. You can make a reservation through Orbitz or the rental car company. But WAIT to buy Mexican insurance until you are at the rental office. Get full coverage (it usually doubles the cost) but it is well worth it. Sometimes they will reduce the cost of insurance, if you say you will take it if you can get it at a lower price. To Cabo Pulmo from Los Cabos Airport: The trip from Los Cabos Airport to Cabo Pulmo takes about 90 minutes.

Driving Directions:
You will probably want to buy groceries first (see section on supplies).

To get to a large grocery store follow these directions:

Groceries:
As you leave the airport turn right following the signs to La Paz and San Jose. Follow the signs to San Jose. This will put you on Highway 1 south going towards San Jose. In about five minutes you will see a Soriana store on your right (a very large store). You may want to purchase a Styrofoam cooler. Suggest you put ice in the cooler or in a cardboard box to keep your cold items cold. As you depart Soriana, turn left on Highway 1 going north towards La Paz. Now you are on Highway 1 north going towards Cabo Pulmo. Signs will guide you towards La Paz but will not say “Highway 1”.

From the airport:
As you leave the airport turn right following the signs to La Paz and San Jose. Follow the signs to La Paz. This will put you on Highway 1 traveling north towards La Paz (and Cabo Pulmo). Signs will guide you towards La Paz but will not say “Highway 1”.

Directions once you are on Highway 1 going north towards La Paz:

Continue on Highway 1 north for 26 miles (42 km). Just after the kilometer 92 marker, turn right towards Cabo Pulmo. (If you have crossed a bridge after kilometer 92 you have you missed your turn).

Continue for 5 miles (8 km) passing through the village of Santa Cruz. When you see the entrance to La Ribera do not enter the town. Turn right at the OXXO store towards Cabo Pulmo. Just after making this turn, you will see El Rey grocery store on the right. This is a small store with basic supplies such as tortillas some vegetables canned goods and milk.

Travel 10 miles (16 km) of pavement road passing Punta Colorado . The road eventually becomes a dirt road. Continue on the dirt road for 6 miles (10 km). You will turn a corner and look down on the beautiful little town of Cabo Pulmo resting on the shores of the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez.

It is a good idea to drive this road in daylight. You will meet other fast drivers, cows, and a few well-placed potholes, making visibility important. If you arrive late, you might stay in San Jose for the night (10 minutes from the airport). We suggest the Tropicana Hotel… well priced with nice accommodations. Have dinner and drive to Cabo Pulmo the next day.

As you enter Cabo Pulmo, in about one block you will see El Cabellero restaurant on the left. Turn left before the restaurant (there is a sign for Nancy's restaurant as well). In 50 yards you will hit a dead end. Turn left. Follow the road through the gates. The two-story green house in front of you at the end of the road is Casa Cabo Pulmo. Enter using the kitchen door on the first floor. Information should be on the kitchen table.

Solar Power – what do I need to know?

Casa Cabo Pulmo is solar powered with a back-up generator. We have a good system but it is essential to conserve power. There is no grid system here…so if the batteries run out…you will be without power. Just be aware – never leave anything turned on unless you are using it at that moment. Be careful, it’s easy to leave a fan or light on and never think about it. Items like curling irons, hair dryers, electric shavers etc. are not permitted. Briefly using items like blenders or coffee grinders is not a problem.

Back to the Questions

Telephone and internet – is it available?

A new cell tower in Cabo Pulmo makes it possible to get both telephone and internet service. If you want to use these services, bring a smart phone. Call your service provider before you leave and make arrangements for a "Mexican plan". Ask to have both telephone and Internet service. Internet service is sometimes provided by the Cabo Pulmo Resort dive shop for a small charge on a daily basis. This will allow you to use your telephone hotspot so you can use Internet from your computer.

Back to the Questions

Fans or Air Conditioning in the house?

Fans are provided in most of the rooms. The bedrooms have air conditioning…but to run the air the generator must run. It costs $5 an hour in propane…we have to pass the cost on to you. Most of the year a/c isn’t necessary because we have lovely breezes.
